Our academic program is designed to allow for English Language Arts and mathematics to be co-taught by two English teachers and two math teachers in the Grade 6-8 span. This co- teaching model, particularly within the critical courses of English and math, facilitates a greater level of differentiated instruction and small group instruction in a class of heterogeneous learners. It accomplishes this by reducing class size and allowing the co-teachers to work together in a variety of forms.
The Lamad Teaching Methodology
The Lamad Teaching Methodology is rooted in two words “To Teach” and “To Learn,” which is the basis for the school motto: The teacher has not taught unless the student has learned. The ultimate goal of the Lamad Teaching Methodology is not the mere impartation of facts, but the changing of lives. The Lamad Method also believes in developing lifelong learners, where truth is realized through self-discovery. The Lamad Method demands effective group interaction, where students are expertly guided in their own uncovering of the truth.
Our scholars will develop writing, reading, speaking, listening, research, and critical thinking skills. Vocabulary development and etymology will be emphasized, and grammar and mechanics will be taught as essential elements of writing as a process. Selections from culturally-relevant literature will be used as models for writing and as a means of developing critical thinking skills.
For sixth grade science, scholars will focus on the mastery of topics related to the life, earth, and physical sciences. Scholars will complete investigative and laboratory experiments. Students will complete the following Full Option Science System (FOSS) Units of study:
–Heredity and Adaptation
–Gravity and Kinetic Energy
For sixth grade health, scholars will engage in learning experiences mental/emotional and personal health and wellness, health eating, safety, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, violence prevention and sexual health. Scholars will learn about physical, social, and emotional changes that occur during adolescence during the growth and development unit.
LACS will use a consistent and systematic approach to sentence construction and word choice. Three days a week, our scholars will receive formal writing instruction. Two days a week, scholars will write independently. Scholars will be exposed to a variety of genres and with significant frequency to ensure development of writing skills and stamina.
For sixth grade social studies, scholars will study the ancient civilizations. Scholars will practice critical thinking by interpreting primary sources and studying history through eyewitness accounts. Themes in 6th Grade Social Studies include geography, economics, government, world religions, and achievements.
For sixth grade Spanish, scholars will get an introduction to basic vocabulary and fundamental sentence structure. Basic listening and reading comprehension will be developed and students will hold simple conversations and write short compositions. This course will also develop cultural awareness by examining the different cultural aspects of the Spanish speaking cultures throughout the world.
Starting in sixth grade, scholars will begin by connecting ratios and rates to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; as well as Pre-Algebra through writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations. Teachers will focus on having scholars understand ratios and develop the ability to compare two things utilizing the concepts of multiplication and division in strategic ways to solve real world problems.
For sixth grade physical education, scholars will apply the principles, practices and the importance of lifelong fitness. Scholars will focus on rules, etiquette, and skill technique for a variety of sports and recreational activities. Fitness evaluations will be completed to determine fitness goals with the goal of improving overall fitness and health.
Engineering and Technology
For the sixth grade technology and engineering, scholars will develop an understanding of the progression and scope of technology. Scholars will begin to see the relationships among technologies and between other fields of study, specifically math and science. Through analyzing technological products and processes, scholars will assess the impacts of technology. Problem solving skills are enhanced throughout the course using hands-on activities.
Our school community will establish and maintain an environment of high expectations of all its scholars- both academically and behaviorally- such that it is palpable to visitors entering the building. Scholars will also benefit from the support of an intimate family culture. Such a community will encourage all scholars, to succeed, to feel safe, and to take the risks necessary to succeed without fear of ridicule by their peers or community.
INTEGRATION OF MATH AND SCIENCE ACROSS ALL SUBJECTS
We will take the unique approach of integrating math and science in all subjects. This integration will provide an opportunity for scholars to make natural and meaningful connections between and among multiple content areas.
DATA-DRIVEN INSTRUCTIONAL FRAMEWORK
LACS leaders and teacher will focus on data obsessively to inform a variety of instructional best practices to differentiate instruction in both homogeneous and heterogeneous groupings of students to deliver the school’s rigorous, standards-based curriculum. Teachers must always know what their scholars do not know as well as the depth of what they understand. This requires constant and continual assessments of scholars’ skill and knowledge through a variety of methods.
LACS will support its teachers in the data-driven aspect of instruction through the school’s commitment to implementing a progress monitoring system. Our “Progress Monitoring Process” provides the framework for instructional leaders and teachers to monitor the progress of scholars on an individual, aggregate and disaggregated basis and make informed adjustments and/or changes to curriculum, instruction and professional development priorities.
Lamad Academy Charter School will prepare and inspire students to successfully and enthusiastically pursue advanced mathematics and science education in their secondary and post-secondary careers. With American economic and national security dependent on the development of a scientifically-trained and technically-skilled workforce, LACS will graduate a cadre of such future talent by immersing its students in an academically rigorous standards-based curriculum with a principal emphasis on mathematics and science.
